Prime Minister, Imran Khan laid the foundation stone of New Gwadar International Airport on 29thMarch, 2019. It’s a new Greenfield airport that is being built under CPEC and a joint venture of Pakistan, China and Oman. It will be managed and operated by Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority. The project was approved back in 2015. The agreement of the New Gwadar Airport was signed between China and Pakistan under the CPEC in 2017 and the soil testing for the land was started in 2018.
The New Gwadar green field airport will be covering an area of 4,300 acres and it will be in the big list of all the international airports in Pakistan. The airport is expected to be commissioning in 2022 and will be the second airport in Pakistan capable of handling the largest passenger aircraft in the world, Airbus A380.
The airport is expected to open new horizons of trade in Pakistan boosting trade of Pakistan mainly with China and other countries include Gulf States.
The New Gwadar Airport is located 26km north-east of the current airport in Gwadar. It is on the South western Arabian Sea cost in Baluchistan. It is next to Makran coastal highway and the area in which the land acquired for the airport is specifically called Gurandani. This international airport will also be used as a pit stop by the international flights.
Features of the New Gwadar International Airport
The New Gwadar International Airport is being constructed keeping in mind the pace at which Gwadar is expected to flourish in terms of trade and residential place. The Gwadar Smart City project is expected to attract over 2 million people with endless job opportunities. That is why, the New Gwadar Airport Project is constructed on modern terms and it is meant to accommodate all types of aircrafts having both narrow-body and wide-body. It will be accommodating planes for both national and international routes.
The new greenfield airport in Gwadar will have a modern terminal building having an area of 14,000sq meter. The cargo terminal will be handling 30,000t a year. The whole project is built keeping in mind the international standards to make the passengers feel at ease. The facilities offered at the airport will be luxury style that will add up to the comfort of the passengers.
There will be basic features such as an Air Traffic Control Tower, fire, crash and rescue facilities as well as a fuel pump. There will be luxurious waiting areas where there will be all kind of amenities. Also, food brands will be there to host the passengers.
There will be an additional second runway other than the main runway situated on the North of main runway.
The New Gwadar International Airport has runways built for the purpose of accommodating large aircrafts having wide bodies. The main runway of the airport is of 3,650 meters and its width is 75 meters. The 23 meters long taxiway will also be built along with 10 meters paved shoulders on both sides. The second runway that is going to be built later, will be assisting with more number of flights.
With Gwadar expected to become one of the most significant economic hub of Pakistan, an international airport is the basic requirement which is now being fulfilled by the government of Pakistan under the CPEC. Thus, the time is not far when the New Gwadar Airport will be completed. However, upon its completion, the value of the Gwadar housing schemes land will also increase.
